Threads - Pt I - Event Photography

Event Photography

A large portion of my college projects focused on the art that surrounded the music scene. I was obsessed with the posters and album covers of Storm Thorgerson, I idolised Annie Leibovitz, and I must've watched this video by Lasse Gjertsen about a hundred times.

A number of my friends were in bands and would play gigs at local venues. You'd often find me crawling around in front of the stage, viewfinder pressed to my face. Within a year, I was being asked to cover events.

Commercial photography was not well received by my university lecturers, they preferred fine art, and so this thread felt separate to my degree. I continued covering local events and was lucky enough to bag a spare ticket to a talk, organised for the Press & Editorial Photography students, by Gered Mankowitz.

The slideshow below details (a very small portion of) the range of music-related reportage through College up to Graduation.

My subject matter included friends, local bands, parties, events, exhibitions, and festivals. Some events I was asked to attend, others I just brought my camera along. I was addicted.
